Big Backyard Bugs, Plants, and Critters – STEM Summer Camp

At STEM, we love the unconventional and crave new and exciting ways to teach our children. Our STEM philosophy has always been that every child’s mind is different, and so we need to employ unique and tactful ways to inspire, teach, and grow. Yet even with these ideals in mind, there may be a lingering question: what do young children gain out of learning the fundamentals of ecosystems? It’s simple. Teach a child to love and nurture the wildlife around them and you will create an always learning, ever curious outdoor adventurer.

During our first week of STEM Summer Camp, our scholars planted vegetables and flowers in our outdoor garden. During the planting process, our wonderful teachers carefully explained the fundamentals of a plant’s life cycle. Water and sunlight might seem like basic concepts, but the reality is that these are the foundations children need for their future learnings on photosynthesis and more, as they advance in their academic careers.

Beyond planting our garden and learning the basics of plant life, our summer camp scholars spent their time learning about bugs and critters. Our students learned about exoskeletons and bugs that shed their skin, larva, as well as the average life cycle of all things that live beneath the soil of our very own garden.

To us, our “Big Backyard Bugs, Plants and Critters” camp might sound like a week of learning about all the creepy, crawly things that we work hard to avoid, but to our students, this week of STEM Summer Camp showed them that their backyard is an oasis of plant and animal life that’s just waiting to be discovered.
